A 4-in-1 bucket (also known as a combination bucket or clamshell bucket) is one of the most versatile attachments for a skid steer. It uses a hydraulic "jaw" mechanism that allows the bucket to open and close

The four primary functions are:

1. Loading (Standard Bucket)

  • How it works: With the jaws completely closed, it functions exactly like a traditional bucket.
  • Best for: Scooping, carrying, and dumping loose materials like dirt, gravel, mulch, or sand.

2. Grappling (Clamping)

  • How it works: The hydraulic jaws open up and then clamp down on objects.
  • Best for: Picking up "difficult" items that won't stay in a normal bucket, such as logs, large rocks, concrete debris, or brush. It provides a secure grip so items don't roll out while driving.

3. Dozing (Bulldozing)

  • How it works: By opening the jaws fully, the back part of the bucket acts as a vertical dozer blade.
  • Best for: Pushing piles of dirt, clearing brush, or leveling out a workspace. It allows the skid steer to act like a mini-bulldozer.

4. Scraping / Leveling (Bottom Dumping)

  • How it works: You can open the "clamshell" slightly to let material fall out the bottom slowly while moving, or use the bottom edges to scrape and level the ground.
  • Best for: Spreading material evenly (like gravel on a driveway) or "back-dragging" to create a smooth, finished grade.
